About Census 2011

The population census in India has been a major exercise performed once in every 10 years. Needless to say, data collected by the census forms the basis for evolving different policies and programs and allocation of resources. The last census was held in 2001.

Census 2011 will be the 15th in the series since 1872 and the 7th since independence in India. The Census 2011 has been planned this time in 2 phases. The 1st phase being the house listing and housing census is currently underway. In addition, the household schedule of the National Population Register is also being canvassed during the housing phase. The house listing operations has been already completed in almost all the states and Union Territories.

The population enumeration will be the 2nd phase of the whole exercise and has been scheduled to be undertaken during February 9th to 28th, 2011.
